Access Living is a nationally renowned non-profit organization that provides services, programs, and support to people with all types of disabilities. Michuda Construction, Inc. provided Pre-Construction and General Contracting Services to Access Living’s New Headquarters Building at 115 West Chicago Avenue in Chicago, IL.

The 4-story building serves as headquarters for the renowned community organization and stands as a national model for the integration of Universal and Green design. Pre-construction budgeting, scheduling, and value engineering were completed at 5 milestone stages. Building components include an elaborate glass curtain wall system with steel stud walls, a 5,000 SF hydro tech green garden roof system with a brick paver terrace, and a mechanical penthouse.

The U.S. Green Building Council awarded Access Living’s building Gold LEED Certification. Michuda Construction was contracted to achieve a Silver LEED Certification. During the construction process, Michuda and the Access Living project team worked together to gain additional credits. The team achieved two additional construction credits - one innovation credit for doubling the local harvesting goal and another innovation credit for doubling the recycling goal.

In addition to the innovation credits, water-efficient landscaping with no potable use or irrigation, as well as water use reduction on-site during construction helped the project team gain more credits in the water efficiency category. All of these additional credits enabled the team to achieve Gold LEED Certification status.
