PROJECT OUTCOME

Michuda Construction, in partnership with inHealth Life Sciences, successfully completed the development of a high-complexity toxicology and wastewater epidemiology laboratory, meeting the stringent standards required for CAP (College of American Pathologists) Accreditation. This state-of-the-art laboratory facility underscores our expertise in combining precise construction management with life sciences knowledge to support cutting-edge diagnostic research.

PROJECT SCOPE

Michuda Construction served as the Construction Manager for this complex laboratory project. The scope involved extensive planning, precise infrastructure modifications, and rigorous compliance measures to ensure a facility capable of high-level diagnostics and research.

Key Elements of the Project:

  • Pre-Construction Planning: Conducted comprehensive assessments and collaborated with stakeholders to integrate advanced design principles, establishing an optimal environment for complex laboratory functions.

  • Demolition: Cleared the existing space to prepare for laboratory installation.

  • Electrical & Voltage Assessment: Worked closely with inHealth’s technical team to tailor a power distribution system ensuring consistent and stable power to laboratory spaces.

  • Ventilation System Overhaul: Designed and implemented a sophisticated HVAC system to counteract equipment heat output, integrate HEPA filters, create negative pressure zones, and maintain precise air exchange rates in compliance with CAP standards.

  • Lab-Specific Infrastructure: Incorporated anti-static flooring, chemical-resistant countertops, emergency eyewash stations, and safety showers to ensure a safe, efficient working environment for laboratory personnel.

  • Equipment Installation & Regulatory Compliance: Integrated specialized laboratory equipment while maintaining strict adherence to CAP standards, ensuring all aspects of the build, from materials to spatial design, supported precise laboratory operations.

CHALLENGES & SOLUTIONS

  1. Meeting Stringent Regulatory Standards:

    • Challenge: Ensuring compliance with the rigorous requirements for CAP Accreditation.

    • Solution: Proactively monitored and aligned all construction phases with CAP standards, including material selection and equipment installation.

  2. Complex Electrical and Ventilation Needs:

    • Challenge: Providing reliable power and effective ventilation for sensitive equipment.

    • Solution: Designed a tailored power distribution system and sophisticated HVAC solutions to maintain precise environmental conditions.

  3. Coordination in an Occupied Facility:

    • Challenge: Minimizing disruption to ongoing operations during construction.

    • Solution: Strategically scheduled and phased construction activities to ensure seamless transitions and continuous functionality.
