PROJECT PROFILE

Ascension St. Joseph Hospital Linear Accelerator Build-Out Location: Joliet, Illinois Size: 7,500 sq.ft. Delivery Method: Construction Manager at Risk

PROJECT SCOPE

Michuda Construction completed the 7,500-square-foot build-out for a new linear accelerator suite at Ascension St. Joseph Hospital, designed to advance the hospital’s cancer treatment capabilities with state-of-the-art radiation therapy. This highly specialized facility provides precision treatment for patients, offering both functionality and a patient-centered environment within the hospital’s oncology department.

The scope of work for this project encompassed all aspects required for a new linear accelerator installation, including:

  • Radiation Shielding and Structural Elements: The construction required substantial structural reinforcement and the integration of high-density radiation shielding materials. Thickened concrete walls and extensive use of lead lining were incorporated to contain radiation within the suite. Each wall was precisely calibrated based on radiation emission calculations, ensuring safe containment and compliance with regulatory standards.

  • Installation of Lead-Lined Doors: The project included the installation of massive lead-lined doors, each weighing over 3,000 pounds, to provide necessary shielding while accommodating patient access. The doors, reinforced with steel frames and set within structurally enhanced walls, were carefully installed to ensure ease of use, radiation containment, and durability, given the demands of repeated daily operation.

  • HVAC and MEP Integration: Specialized HVAC systems were installed to regulate the suite’s climate and prevent overheating of sensitive equipment. The project involved the installation of dedicated mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems designed to support the high energy load of the linear accelerator, with redundant systems in place to ensure operational reliability.

  • Electrical Infrastructure for High-Load Equipment: The linear accelerator requires a high-power electrical setup with precise grounding and voltage regulation. Michuda’s team coordinated with electrical engineers to integrate power distribution systems, dedicated transformers, and control systems to meet the accelerator’s power demands and protect equipment integrity.

  • Control Room and Operator Stations: The suite includes a dedicated control room for technicians to safely monitor and operate the linear accelerator. Michuda incorporated viewing windows with leaded glass and soundproofing, allowing seamless communication between the operator and the treatment room while maintaining a radiation-safe environment.

  • Patient Comfort and Safety Enhancements: The treatment space was designed to offer a calming environment, with soft finishes and lighting to reduce patient anxiety. Patient accessibility was prioritized, ensuring that the entryways, circulation areas, and treatment space align with ADA standards and accommodate patient needs.

CHALLENGES & SOLUTIONS

The linear accelerator build-out at Ascension St. Joseph Hospital presented unique challenges that required innovative solutions:

  • Radiation Safety and Shielding Requirements: Ensuring radiation containment was a primary focus, with the construction of high-density concrete walls and installation of lead-lined doors to provide the necessary shielding. Michuda collaborated with radiation safety experts to design a suite that met stringent regulatory standards and achieved optimal safety for staff and patients.

  • Structural Reinforcement for Equipment and Doors: The installation of heavy-duty lead doors and reinforced walls required significant structural upgrades to support the weight and function of these elements. Michuda’s team installed additional steel framing within walls to bear the load and employed precision alignment during door installation to ensure smooth operation and safe containment.

  • HVAC and Electrical Demands: To support the high energy requirements of the linear accelerator, Michuda installed dedicated HVAC and electrical systems designed for continuous, high-load use. The HVAC system was customized for temperature control, while the electrical setup included a specialized power distribution system with redundancy, ensuring operational continuity.
