Project Profile

The successful installation of a new MRI suite at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center has enhanced the hospital’s imaging capabilities, providing patients with access to advanced diagnostic technology in a conveniently located, centralized suite. Michuda Construction’s careful planning ensured a seamless integration of the MRI equipment with minimal impact on ongoing hospital operations.

PROJECT SCOPE

Michuda Construction provided Construction Management at Risk services for the installation of the MRI Suite on the lower level of Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center. This project required the development of a strategic pathway for equipment delivery through occupied hospital spaces, all while ensuring no disruptions to egress or hospital operations.

The scope of work included:

  • Dismantling and Removal of Outdated Equipment: Safe de-installation and removal of previous imaging machinery to prepare the space for the new MRI unit.

  • Installation of Advanced MRI Technology: Precise installation and calibration of the new MRI system, requiring specialized MEP infrastructure adjustments.

  • Critical Pathway Planning: Utilizing BIM technology and augmented reality, Michuda’s team developed a pathway to safely transport the MRI through hospital hallways and doorways, ensuring both spatial compatibility and uninterrupted hospital operations.

  • Safety Protocols and Infection Control: Implementation of infection control measures and adherence to Advocate Illinois Masonic’s safety standards to protect patients and staff throughout the project.

CHALLENGES & SOLUTIONS

The MRI Suite installation presented specific challenges, particularly with regard to transporting large, sensitive equipment through an operational hospital. Michuda addressed these with targeted solutions:

  1. Pathway Through Occupied Space: Transporting the MRI unit through occupied hospital areas required extensive planning. Michuda scheduled transport during off-peak hours to avoid disruptions and maintained clear access for patient care.

  2. Spatial Constraints: Ensuring that the MRI could physically fit through hallways and doorways posed logistical challenges. Michuda utilized BIM technology with augmented reality to accurately map the transport route, ensuring precise alignment with hospital infrastructure.

  3. Safety and Compliance: To maintain a safe environment, Michuda coordinated all activities in compliance with infection control and hospital safety protocols. Regular briefings and contingency plans ensured preparedness for all aspects of the equipment installation.

KEY PROJECT ELEMENTS

  • Integration of BIM and Augmented Reality: Leveraged BIM and augmented reality to enhance planning accuracy and streamline the equipment transport process.

  • Advanced Imaging Technology: Installation of a state-of-the-art MRI system to upgrade diagnostic services.

  • Minimized Operational Disruption: Strategic scheduling and planning to ensure hospital operations remained unaffected during the project.
