PROJECT SCOPE
Advocate Christ Medical Center enlisted Michuda Construction to transform the 3rd floor of its facility into a dedicated oncology suite. The existing space, previously occupied by various departments and office staff, required a full-scale renovation to meet the hospital’s growing need for specialized cancer care. Michuda Construction successfully completed the demolition of 13,000 square feet of the 3rd floor and oversaw the conversion into a modern oncology suite.
The project included the construction of 22 new private patient rooms, each designed with patient comfort and safety in mind. Additional spaces included a centralized nurse station, a family consultation room for private discussions, and a conference room to facilitate staff meetings and care coordination. The layout was carefully planned to optimize patient flow, minimize noise, and provide a calming environment for patients undergoing treatment.
CHALLENGES & SOLUTIONS
The transformation of the 3rd floor into an oncology suite presented several unique challenges, which Michuda Construction addressed with a strategic approach:
Minimizing Disruptions in an Active Hospital: Given that the construction was taking place within an active healthcare facility, maintaining safety and minimizing disruptions to adjacent areas were top priorities. Michuda implemented strict ICRA (Infection Control Risk Assessment) measures to ensure patient safety, and off-hour work was scheduled to reduce noise and impact during peak operational times.
Efficient Phasing of Demolition and Construction: The existing space required a comprehensive demolition process, with careful removal of old walls, flooring, and MEP infrastructure. To maintain project momentum, Michuda employed a phased approach, allowing for concurrent demolition and new construction activities without affecting the project timeline.
Integrating Modern MEP Systems: Upgrading mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems was a critical aspect of the renovation. Michuda worked closely with the design team and hospital facilities to implement modern MEP solutions that support the needs of oncology care, ensuring proper ventilation, electrical capacity, and plumbing systems in each patient room.
