PROJECT SCOPE
Serving as the General Contractor, Michuda Construction undertook extensive upgrades to the Adams & Wabash Elevated Station. The station, a critical transportation hub serving the Brown, Green, Orange, Pink, and Purple Lines, required careful renovation to modernize the facility while preserving its historic significance within Chicago’s Loop.
Scope of work included:
Structural Improvements: Reinforcement and modernization of the station’s structural components, ensuring safety and long-term durability.
Accessibility Enhancements: Installation of accessibility features to improve the experience for passengers, including upgraded access points and ADA-compliant pathways.
Platform Upgrades: Reconstruction and expansion of station platforms, including the addition of new roofing to provide increased passenger comfort and protection from weather.
Mezzanine and Fare Control Modernization: Relocation and upgrading of fare control systems, optimizing passenger flow and reducing congestion at peak times.
Passenger Amenities: Enhancements to station aesthetics, including new lighting, signage, and finishes that contribute to a more welcoming and functional public space.
CHALLENGES & SOLUTIONS
Occupied Transit Space: Renovations were carried out while the station remained operational, requiring detailed coordination to ensure minimal disruption to train service and passenger movement. Off-hour construction schedules and strategic phasing minimized the impact.
Historical Preservation: The station’s historic significance presented unique challenges in terms of material selection and design consistency. Michuda collaborated closely with architects and preservation experts to maintain the station’s historical character.
Public Safety and Coordination: With high pedestrian and train traffic, safety was paramount. Michuda implemented robust safety protocols and worked in close coordination with CTA staff to ensure all construction activities adhered to rigorous safety standards.
KEY PROJECT ELEMENTS
Transit Optimization: Enhanced capacity and passenger flow, improving the overall commuter experience.
Modern Amenities: Creation of a more comfortable, accessible, and aesthetically pleasing station environment.
Historic Preservation: Retention of key historical features, blending modern upgrades with Chicago’s storied transit history.
