In the heart of Advocate Health's commitment to excellence, the transformation of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit Suite stands as a testament to Michuda Construction’s prowess in healthcare facility renovations. This ambitious project involved a comprehensive renovation of an 11,490-square-foot suite within an occupied hospital, presenting unique challenges and opportunities for innovative construction techniques.

PROJECT SUMMARY

Surgical ICU Suite Renovation Location: Advocate Health Size: 11,490 sq.ft. Architect: CannonDesign Engineers: IMEG Delivery Method: Construction Manager Type: Healthcare | Occupied Space

PROJECT SCOPE

Michuda Construction managed the renovation of the Surgical ICU Suite using a Construction Management approach. The project required maintaining hospital operations while delivering a phased upgrade to various critical areas, including:

  • Phase 1-5: These phases allowed continuous use of the ICU and adjacent spaces, minimizing disruption to hospital services.

  • Scope of Work: Included upgrading the staff lounge, conference room, family waiting area, and ICU suite itself. This work involved structural modifications, new finishes, and adjustments to accommodate new medical equipment and workflow.

CHALLENGES & SOLUTIONS

  1. Occupied Space Management

    • Challenge: Conducting construction activities without disrupting ICU operations.

    • Solution: Phased work and off-hour shifts ensured that critical care areas remained operational. Infection Control Risk Assessment (ICRA) measures were implemented to maintain a sterile environment.

  2. Plumbing Work in Sterile Areas

    • Challenge: Modifications to plumbing systems in sterile environments required precision.

    • Solution: Work was coordinated with hospital staff to minimize any impact on patient care, ensuring strict adherence to sterile conditions throughout the renovation process.

  3. Skylight Replacement

    • Challenge: Replacing a large skylight structure required precise staging and careful handling.

    • Solution: The replacement was done in phases to ensure weatherproofing and maintain the integrity of the ICU environment during construction.

OUTCOME

The project was completed within the defined scope and maintained the schedule. The renovated Surgical ICU Suite now provides an improved environment for both patient care and hospital staff operations. Michuda Construction’s approach ensured minimal disruption to critical services and met the technical and functional requirements of the healthcare space.
