Michuda Construction successfully completed the modernization of the "B" Bank elevators at Advocate Christ Medical Center, ensuring compliance with updated building codes and enhancing operational efficiency. The project minimized disruptions in this occupied healthcare facility through meticulous planning and execution, addressing the critical needs of patients, staff, and facilities management.
PROJECT SCOPE
Michuda Construction provided Construction Management services to upgrade six elevators (Cars #7 through #12) in the "B" Bank of Advocate Christ Medical Center. This project required substantial coordination with hospital staff to maintain service levels during construction, meeting the rigorous demands of a healthcare environment.
Key Elements of the Project:

Conduit Installation: Installed approximately 300 linear feet of 1" electrical conduit from the main fire alarm panel to the elevator hoistway panel on the first floor, ensuring modernized fire alarm integrations.
Wall Modifications for Hall Call Buttons: Removed and replaced block walls at 20 hall call button locations to lower call button heights, meeting current ADA compliance standards.
Elevator Modernization: Managed the complete modernization of six elevators in collaboration with ThyssenKrupp Elevator, ensuring upgraded operational capabilities and reliability.
Finish Repairs: Repaired and painted block walls at all disturbed areas for a seamless and professional finish.
CHALLENGES & SOLUTIONS
Minimizing Disruptions in an Operational Facility:
Challenge: Upgrading essential elevators in a high-traffic hospital without disrupting daily operations or compromising safety.
Solution: Phased work schedules, isolating one floor at a time, and limiting downtime to three days per elevator bank to maintain service continuity.
Integration with Existing Fire Alarm Systems:
Challenge: Extending conduit runs to integrate new systems without interfering with critical hospital operations.
Solution: Implemented meticulous planning for conduit runs and conducted off-hour work shifts to minimize impact on hospital operations.
Ensuring ADA Compliance:
Challenge: Modifying hall call button locations to meet ADA height requirements while preserving the structural integrity of existing walls.
Solution: Coordinated with design teams and utilized temporary partitions to safely remove and replace walls, ensuring seamless upgrades to compliance standards.
