PROJECT SUMMARY

Hybrid OR & Clean Suite System Location: Advocate Christ Medical Center, Oak Lawn, IL Size: 2,600 sq.ft. Architect: Matthei & Colin Associates Delivery Method: Construction Manager at Risk / Design Assist Minority Participation: 31%

PROJECT SCOPE

Michuda Construction led the Construction Management at Risk services for the transformative expansion of Advocate Christ Medical Center’s Hybrid OR. The project involved:

  • 1,300 sq.ft. addition for the new Hybrid OR (Phase 1).

  • An additional 1,300 sq.ft. reserved for a future Hybrid OR (Phase 2).

  • Innovative design features, including a 45-degree angle placement of equipment for optimized space usage and a prefabricated Clean Suite ceiling system to streamline operations and enhance patient care.

CHALLENGES & SOLUTIONS

  1. Expansion of Hybrid OR Phase 1 and Phase 2

    • Challenge: Managing the phased expansion required precise coordination to ensure the new Hybrid OR suite integrated seamlessly with the hospital’s existing infrastructure. The project involved constructing a new 1,300 sq.ft. OR addition while preparing for a future OR expansion in the same footprint.

    • Solution: Michuda executed the project in four phases, focusing on the 2nd-floor mechanical room to support the 3rd-floor addition. This phased approach ensured each stage progressed without impacting hospital operations. We also utilized a designated pocket within the existing “circle drive” of the campus, ensuring construction activities remained organized and minimally disruptive.

  2. Building Exterior Aesthetics

    • Challenge: The building’s exterior needed to match the aesthetics of the existing outpatient pavilion, which featured precast concrete and a spandrel glass curtain wall.

    • Solution: Michuda meticulously aligned the new exterior with the existing structure, using precast concreteand spandrel glass to create a cohesive look. This attention to detail ensured that the expansion blended seamlessly with the surrounding campus.

  3. Maintaining Seamless Operations

    • Challenge: Ensuring uninterrupted operation of the existing OR during construction was critical, especially during multiple equipment shutdowns.

    • Solution: Michuda carefully coordinated multiple shutdowns, scheduling them to minimize disruption to hospital services. The strategic use of 45-degree angle equipment placement optimized the space within the Hybrid OR, while the integration of a prefabricated Clean Suite ceiling system facilitated a smooth installation, reducing time on site and enhancing the overall workflow.
