Project Scope: The IR Bi-Plane Suite renovation involved transforming an existing space within the main radiology department. The new construction included a state-of-the-art IR Bi-Plane Suite, recovery room, staff lockers, and bathrooms. Surrounded by two existing X-Ray rooms, an MRI, and an existing Bi-Plane suite, the renovation required detailed planning and execution. The project adopted a Design Assist approach, ensuring collaboration between the construction team and design professionals to meet the hospital's requirements for high-quality patient care.

Challenges & Solutions: The renovation of the IR Bi-Plane Suite at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center presented a series of complex challenges that required innovative solutions to ensure project success. The scope included a comprehensive overhaul of multiple spaces, such as old imaging rooms, an emergency egress corridor, staff workroom, offices, and locker rooms, many dating back to 1970. Given the age and condition of these areas, Michuda Construction developed a detailed plan that addressed the unique requirements of each space. By implementing a phased approach, the team ensured systematic and efficient renovation without compromising ongoing hospital operations.

The initial phase focused on establishing a new emergency egress corridor and nurse stations—critical elements for maintaining safety during construction. Early planning was essential to streamline this enabling phase, with Michuda working closely with hospital stakeholders to coordinate logistics and ensure smooth implementation.

Creating the necessary mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) infrastructure was another significant challenge. The installation of HVAC systems, medical gases, electrical components, and plumbing required extensive building-wide shutdowns. Michuda’s team conducted thorough MEP planning, strategically scheduled shutdowns, and provided on-site supervision to minimize disruption and ensure continuity of hospital services.

Given the scope of work, stringent infection prevention measures were essential to protect both patients and staff. The team established a daily monitoring system to oversee infection control protocols, conducting training sessions to increase awareness and compliance among the project team. This proactive approach minimized the impact on surrounding areas, maintaining a safe environment throughout the renovation.

Finally, the installation of new infrastructure and finishes involved the placement of Unistrut to support a medical gas boom, along with new framing, ceilings, and finishes across the suite. Michuda’s team carefully planned this phase, ensuring structural integrity while achieving a cohesive and aesthetically pleasing outcome that aligned with the hospital’s design standards.

Project Outcome: The IR Bi-Plane Suite renovation was completed on time and successfully enhanced Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center’s imaging capabilities. The new suite supports efficient medical procedures while maintaining high standards of patient care and safety. Michuda Construction’s expertise in healthcare infrastructure ensured minimal disruptions, strict infection control, and a smooth integration of advanced medical technology.
