PROJECT PROFILE
Advocate South Suburban Hospital 2 West Pediatric Unit
Location: Hazel Crest, Illinois
Size: 10-Bed Pediatric Unit
Architect: BSA LifeStructures
Delivery Method: Construction Manager at Risk
PROJECT SCOPE
Michuda Construction provided Construction Management at Risk services for the renovation of the 2nd floor at Advocate South Suburban Hospital, transforming the space into a dedicated 10-bed Pediatric Unit. This new unit serves a vital role in the community, providing specialized care for over 1,200 Southland children each year who would otherwise be transferred to adult units or facilities outside the community.
The project scope included:
Construction of 10 private patient rooms designed for pediatric care, along with an isolation room to manage patients with infectious conditions.
Addition of a procedure room to accommodate minor treatments within the unit, reducing the need to transport young patients to other hospital areas.
Creation of a playroom for patients, providing a comforting space where children can engage in activities during their stay.
Establishment of family waiting rooms to ensure a supportive environment for families, allowing them to remain close to their children during treatment.
CHALLENGES & SOLUTIONS
The renovation of the 2nd floor into a dedicated pediatric unit presented several challenges, which Michuda addressed with strategic solutions:
Ensuring Minimal Disruption in an Active Hospital: Given that the hospital remained fully operational during the renovation, Michuda implemented infection control measures and scheduled work to minimize disruptions to adjacent units, prioritizing patient and staff safety.
Creating a Child-Friendly Environment: The design needed to cater specifically to young patients. Michuda collaborated with BSA LifeStructures to create a welcoming and comforting environment for children, incorporating colorful finishes, soft lighting, and engaging elements in patient rooms and play areas to reduce anxiety and create a child-friendly atmosphere.
Privacy and Specialized Care Needs: To accommodate the specialized needs of pediatric patients, each room was designed to ensure privacy and safety, with all necessary medical infrastructure to support pediatric care. The layout of rooms and support spaces, including the procedure and isolation rooms, was optimized for seamless care delivery.
