PROJECT SCOPE

Michuda Construction served as the General Contractor for the exterior renovation of Ralph J. Bunche Elementary School in Chicago, Illinois. The scope of work focused on comprehensive improvements to the school’s exterior brick and masonry surfaces to enhance longevity, safety, and aesthetics.

The scope of work included:

• Brick and Masonry Renovation: Restoration and repair of the existing brick façade, addressing weathered and damaged sections to restore structural integrity.

• Masonry Cleaning and Tuckpointing: Thorough cleaning of masonry surfaces and tuckpointing to ensure proper sealing, water resistance, and an extended lifespan of the exterior walls.

• Structural Reinforcement: Implementation of structural enhancements where necessary to improve the building’s resilience against environmental elements.

• Safety and Compliance Measures: Adherence to all safety and building code requirements during the renovation process, ensuring a secure and compliant final product.
  

CHALLENGES & SOLUTIONS

1. Occupied School Site: Given the project’s location within an active school, Michuda prioritized safety by establishing protective barriers, scheduling work during non-peak school hours, and maintaining clear communication with school administrators.

2. Aging Masonry: The existing brickwork presented various levels of wear and damage. Michuda’s team performed a detailed assessment to prioritize and execute repairs that would preserve the façade’s integrity and appearance.
