PROJECT PROFILE

Northwestern Medicine Same Day Surgery – River North Location: Chicago, IL Size: 4,265 sq.ft. Architect: Proteus Group Delivery Method: Construction Manager at Risk

PROJECT SCOPE

Michuda Construction provided construction management services for the interior build-out of the Northwestern Medicine Same Day Surgery Center in Chicago’s River North area. This 4,265-square-foot space serves a high-profile orthopedic practice that provides specialized care to the Chicago Blackhawks and Chicago Bulls. The renovation was designed to align the clinic’s appearance with Northwestern Medicine’s brand expectations, creating a modern, welcoming environment for patients and staff alike.

The scope of the project included:

  • Phase 1: Renovation of waiting rooms, reception areas, and office support spaces to ensure a professional and patient-centered first impression. Given that the clinic remained operational during regular hours, Michuda coordinated off-hour and weekend shifts to complete all work without disrupting patient care.

  • Phase 2: Renovation of bathroom and locker room facilities, ensuring upgraded amenities that meet Northwestern Medicine’s quality standards. The phased approach allowed clinic operations to continue smoothly, maintaining safety and minimizing patient and staff disruption.

Michuda’s team worked closely with the architectural firm Proteus Group to achieve Northwestern Medicine’s specific design and functionality requirements. This collaboration ensured that every aspect of the renovation, from finishes to layout adjustments, aligned with the client’s goals.

CHALLENGES & SOLUTIONS

Renovating an active surgical clinic in a high-profile location presented several unique challenges, which Michuda addressed with strategic planning and effective solutions:

  • Maintaining Operations in an Occupied Clinic: Given that the clinic was fully operational during business hours, all renovation work was scheduled after hours and on weekends. Michuda implemented strict ICRA (Infection Control Risk Assessment) protocols to safeguard patients and staff while maintaining a clean, organized jobsite.

  • Ensuring Minimal Disruption to Patient Care: Working in a sensitive healthcare environment required careful coordination with clinic staff to prevent disruption to patient care and procedures. Michuda’s project team developed a phased approach, ensuring work areas were isolated and any noise or dust was contained within the construction zones.

  • High-End Finishes for Brand Consistency: As a part of Northwestern Medicine, the surgery center required high-end finishes and brand-aligned aesthetics. Michuda sourced premium materials and fixtures that reflected Northwestern Medicine’s standards, ensuring a cohesive and polished appearance throughout the space.
